Ordinary people are showing extraordinary generosity by leaving legacy gifts to charity in their wills and estate plans.  Charitable giving is a tangible way for us to have a stake in our community by support causes and institutions that are close to our hearts. Your charitable gift touches those in need today. The community’s problems aren’t easy to solve, but your gifts build solutions. The charitable organizations you support also touch the future. Not only can your bequest help leave the world a better place long after your lifetime, your donation to a charitable organization or a non-profit group is tax deductible.

Donor Stories...

“My mother received help from several charities before she died.  To show my appreciation, I’ve arranged for my savings bonds to be given to theses charities when I pass away.  My mother would be pleased.”

“I’ve been volunteering for a particular charity for many years.  When I’m gone, I want to do something special.  My financial advisor suggested I name the charity as the beneficiary of my life insurance.  It makes me feel good knowing they’ll continue to get my help.”

Four steps to leave your legacy:

  1. Describe to whom and why you’d like to leave a gift.  Perhaps it’s music you love or the work of a particular organization you admire.  You may also want to leave a gift in memory of a loved one or for a specific use like medical research.
  2. Contact your favorite charity for more information regarding what opportunities are open to you and how your gift helps their work.
  3. Contact a professional such as an attorney or financial advisor to tell you about the tax benefits of planned gifts.  If you do not have an advisor and need a referral, you may contact the Leave a Legacy Minnesota office.
  4. Review your personal planning (estate plan, will, beneficiary designations or asset title) to ensure that your charitable wishes are accomplished.
