Job Title Director of Estate and Gift Planning
Job Description

The Director of Estate and Gift Planning is a part of a team responsible for over 15% of the organization's revenue; second only to our well-known "Relay for Life" and other special events. The Director of Estate and Gift Planning builds relationships with planned giving prospects and donors in addition to estate and financial planning professionals.

  • Meet personally with donors; donor prospects and advisors (minimum of 220 visits annually).
  • Offer suggestions for planned giving vehicles to prospects and advisors which meet their estate planning goals and those of ACS.
  • Provide constituents with information about the American Cancer Society's programs of cancer control.
  • Manage a portfolio of 250 qualified active prospects through various stages of moves management.
  • Maintain a high level of expertise regarding state and federal taxes; gift and estate giving methods; and the legal aspect of charitable giving.
  • Conduct professional training seminars and ACS volunteers and staff education presentations.
  • Document $450; 000 to $1300; 000 in new gifts Net Present Value.

Position Requirements

Bachelor's degree and 3+ years experience in major and/or planned giving fundraising, or equivalent experience. Advanced planned giving and related tax training are preferred plus experience with planned giving software.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including telephone etiquette.
  • Impeccable organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects simulataneously.
  • Must exhibit strong judgment and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Computer proficiency.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Experience with planned giving software is preferred. Some travel will be required.

DEVELOPMENT OFFICER
Fairview Foundation, Wyoming, MN

This Development Officer will be responsible for employing industry acceptable standards, procedures, and techniques of fundraising, which will result in major philanthropic gifts to support the mission of Fairview Health Services. This position will be responsible for Major Gift Cultivation and Solicitation, Grateful Patient Program and community relations planning and management for the North Region. The Development Officer will work with other members of the Foundation staff, administration, board members, and volunteers to assure that maximum coordinated efforts are employed. The officer will be responsible for managing prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, recognition, and relationship building leading to major gifts. Once a major gift is made, the officer will then be responsible for assuring proper stewardship of the gift and continuing activities to sustain the relationship. Will also be responsible for coordination and implementation of development communications in conjunction with PR/Marketing staff.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, education, psychology, English or related field conducive to major gift fundraising.
  • Minimum of five years in fundraising, with experience in major gift solicitation and program management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to maintain positive relationships with donors and prospective donors.
  • Excellent skills in verbal and written communications. Must possess the highest standards of ethics as accepted by the professional fundraising community. Must relate well to co-workers, peers, and superiors of the organization as well as to donors and prospective donors.

Job Description

Position Overview:

Reporting to the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) Senior Development Officer, the Associate Development Officer (ADO) will develop and implement fundraising strategies and activities to carry forward the mission and vision of the college. This position will cultivate, solicit, renew, upgrade and steward gifts in support of collegiate priorities with a primary focus on supporting the CFANS development team and building a personal portfolio from unassigned and non qualified prospects. Cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities will include face-to-face, telephone and written interaction with prospects and donors. This position will partner with the CFANS development team to maximize strategies and activities for key prospects, donors, projects and events as assigned. This position complements the development efforts of the Dean and the Director of Development, and works closely with college faculty, External Relations staff in the College. In addition, a strong collaborative working relationship with the University of Minnesota Foundation is necessary.

Major Areas of Accountability

  • Major Gift Development (80%)
    • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CFANS, and the development plans and strategies that pertain to CFANS fundraising priorities.
    • Provide support to CFANS development team members to implement strategies for major ($100,000+) and principal ($1,000,000+) gift prospects and special projects as requested.
    • Coordinate list of unassigned and non qualified prospects with goal of qualifying and building a portfolio of 150 major gift prospects capable of making gifts of $50,000 or more.
    • Partner with the CFANS development team to identify, qualify, and reassign prospects with major gift potential.
    • Build relationships for CFANS with donors, effectively present the case for philanthropic support of CFANS and explain gift opportunities.
    • Follow up with correspondence, phone calls and additional visits as appropriate to close gifts.
    • Provide regular reports on progress and results of the prospect solicitation process and portfolio.
    • Complete and file thorough reports of all contacts in a timely manner. • Utilize both current and planned gift opportunities to best meet donors' needs, interests, and financial capabilities.
    • Review research reports and information from the University donor management system database on assigned donors and prospects.
  • Project Management (20%)
    • Working with the dean, faculty, students, academic/program offices, and Career & Internship Center, this professional will help create, coordinate, and ensure exceptional donor service and positive experiences at all points of donor intersection—actively promoting CFANS as a cultivator of exceptional talent, research, and service.
    • Lead select special events with the purpose of; identifying, qualifying and cultivating new donors.
    • Produce written content for event scripts, direct mail, case materials and other projects as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree.
  • At least three years' experience to include one or more of the following areas of expertise: annual fund, special events, stewardship of donors and/or customers/clients or marketing and communications.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Requires occasional travel, and attendance at some weekend and evening events.

Other Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated, self-directed and highly organized individual who will promote a productive, collegial workplace and be a professional ambassador for CFANS.
  • Able to work effectively in a consensus-style operation that expects and promotes teamwork.
  • Must possess the ability to inspire trust and confidence, and communicate effectively with internal and external audiences.
  • The ability to work independently, manage multiple projects and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality is essential.
  • Must be proficient in the use of information technology and management of database systems.

Appointment:

This is a full-time, 12-month (A-term), annually renewable (K-type) academic professional and administrative (P&A) appointment. Reappointment is contingent upon a successful performance review, continuing need for the position, and availability of funds. This position reports to the College’s Senior Development Officer.
