Breakfast Meeting:
Social Media and the Relationship to Philanthropy

Speaker: Jean Vukas Roberts, Vice President, Development, The Saint Paul Foundation

Minnesota has a long tradition of philanthropy with many people committed to investing in their communities and innovating approaches when needed. Recent realities including the economic crisis, changing demographics, and the widespread use of social networking tools changed what is required of us. This dynamic time in philanthropy is changing how donors make their giving decisions.

At Minnesota Community Foundation and The Saint Paul Foundation, we are assessing the potential for these technologies to expand our donor base and help us stay relevant to up-and-coming generations of donors. Through partnerships with other foundations and nonprofit organizations, we are harnessing the potential of e-giving to enhance philanthropy in Minnesota. This presentation will share some of the exciting ways that philanthropy is reinventing itself in order to meaningfully impact our changing world.

Speaker Highlights:

Jean Vukas Roberts is Vice President of Development for Minnesota Community Foundation and The Saint Paul Foundation. In this role, Jean serves as the chief fundraising and donor stewardship strategist leading and managing development programs for the two community foundations to generate increased charitable capital for the community.

A 24-year veteran with the Foundations, Jean specializes in planned and major gift solicitation, assisting donors and their professional advisors in creating meaningful charitable gifts. She is well-known and respected in the advisor and nonprofit community and is a frequent speaker on charitable giving topics.

Jean is a past chair of the Minnesota Planned Giving Council, and former board member of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning (formerly National Committee on Planned Giving) and the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Minnesota Chapter. She serves on numerous advisory committees, including Hamline University’s Women in Philanthropy Council.

Jean earned a MBA from St. Thomas University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Hamline University.

Education Seminar:
Four Keys to Capture Women’s Wealth, Power and Influence

Speakers: Margaret May Damen, CFP, CLU, ChFC, CDFA

This presentation is appropriate for development officers who cultivate and steward relationships with women donors and for-profit professionals who counsel women in their wealth transfer and philanthropic endeavors.

Learning Objectives

  1. Deepen the professionals' understanding of the donor’s perspective on giving
  2. Gain new insights on how to listen and communicate more effectively, using the knowledge of the donor to build more meaningful and motivating relationships
  3. Learn ways to align the organization or firm more closely with the donor’s interests
  4. Become confident and appreciative of the extraordinary psychological and socio-economic dynamics of women’s giving potential to impact the future of philanthropic methodology

This presentation will address the strategies gift planners need to cultivate and retain the loyalty of women donors with significant wealth; the myths of stereotypical women donors; and the psychology driving the 4 keys to successfully stewarding women donors: 1) Engagement, 2) Involvement, 3) Leadership, and 4) Philanthropy.

Margaret May Damen, CFP, CLU, ChFC, CDFA,  founder of the Institute for Women and Wealth, West Palm Beach, Florida

Mrs. Damen empowers women to create their public and private wealth legacy unique to their passion and purpose to make a difference in the world.

She began her focus on women's financial issues in 1990 with the publication of her book, Money$ense for Women. Today, her renowned workshop series, “The Life you Live is the Legacy You Leave,” transcends traditional estate planning and empowers women to resolve existing psychological or emotional barriers that inhibit meaningful individual and family philanthropic giving.

Mrs. Damen retired as a Senior Financial Advisor and Managing principal with American Express Financial Advisors after a successful 18 year career. Her career in finance began in the mid-70s when she was a Vice-President for Development and Fundraising for Boston University. She received her Bachelor and Masters Degrees from Boston University. She was an instructor in investment and money management at Florida Atlantic University's continuing education department and is Past President of the Treasure Coast Planned Giving Council. Mrs. Damen is a member of the Stuart/Martin County Estate Planning Council, the Institute of Certified Financial Planners, Advisors in Philanthropy and Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties Estate Planning Core Group.

Mrs. Damen is listed in "Who's Who in Finance in America" and is a recipient of the Brandeis Women of the Year award and the Executive Women of the Palm Beach's Leadership Award.

Margaret May Damen is an accomplished trainer and public speaker. Her financial expertise, her experience in estate planning, philanthropic giving and her ability to speak from the heart. Allow her to bring a unique perspective to her clients and audiences. Her latest book will be published by John Wiley & Sons in Spring 2009.
