Breakfast Meeting:
A College President's Perspective on Philanthropy and Best Practices

Speaker: Dr. Paul Pribbenow, President of Augsburg College

Paul plans to share his thoughts and insights on the following: 1) ways in which Advancement professionals can build strong and effective working relationships with the President — especially in cultivating positive and productive relationships with Board members and major (principal) donors; 2) building key donor relationships and mission-driven, donor-centered fundraising from a President's perspective — with sensitivity, spirit and accountability; and 3) new/creative ways to advance leadership giving and ignite the spirit of generosity — during these challenging times.

Speaker Highlights:

Paul Pribbenow, the 10th president of Augsburg College, a private liberal arts college associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and located in Minneapolis, is recognized as one of the country’s most engaging commentators and teachers on ethics, philanthropy and American public life.

Before coming to Augsburg College in 2006, Pribbenow served as president of Rockford College in Rockford, Ill. He also has served as research fellow for the Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts at Wabash College (Indiana); dean for College Advancement and secretary of the Board of Trustees at Wabash College; vice president of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; and associate dean of the Divinity School of the University of Chicago.

Pribbenow holds a BA (1978) from Luther College (Iowa), and an MA (1979) and PhD (1993) in social ethics from the University of Chicago.

Education Seminar:
Board Development and Working With Boards

Speakers: Dee Vandeventer, Founder, Partner and the “V” of ME&V

A recent Urban Institute study asked nonprofit leaders to rank the performance of their boards of directors. Most rated their boards as doing a “good” or “excellent” job in all areas, except fundraising. More than half (51 percent) rated their boards as only “fair” or “poor” when it came to helping raise funds or donating. So why the disconnect, and what can be done to supercharge board members into providing the critical spark for success? This interactive session will explore best practices in developing board member potential, building on relationships and plugging in to an organization’s greatest philanthropic asset—its board of directors.

Speaker Highlights:

Dee’s passion is fundraising. As a founding partner and “retired” president of ME&V, an integrated marketing communications and fundraising company, she has worked with hundreds of nonprofits throughout the country. She earned her B.S. in Psychology from Iowa State University and an M.A. in Communications/ Public Relations from the University of Northern Iowa.

Her public relations and fundraising career spans nearly three decades. She has developed and presented numerous seminars and workshops to organizations such as the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ (AFP) 2003 and 2005-2009 International Conferences on Fundraising; the 2006 and 2010 National Hospice and Palliative Care Management and Leadership Conferences; the 2007 Joint Conference of the American Society on Aging and the National Council on Aging; the 2007 and 2008 National Association of Area Agencies on Aging Conferences. She was a faculty member of the 2007 AFP Audio Conference Series, authored articles and books and serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Northern Iowa.

Dee’s a big believer in volunteerism and has led and served on a number of boards. Leadership of civic and community organizations include chair of the 2006 Cedar Valley United Way Campaign; Chair of the Iowa State University Women and Philanthropy National Committee; past chair of the Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce and the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa; past president of the Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls, Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Marketing, Advertising and Communicators Club of Northeast Iowa. Dee helped to establish the Cedar Falls Community Schools Foundation and the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance. She also has served on many community boards including the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra, OpportunityWorks, YWCA, First Congregational Church, Conestoga Council of Girl Scouts, Cedar Valley Hospice, Sturgis Falls, My Waterloo Days and Black Hawk Leadership.

Dee’s recognitions include the American Humanics 2010 Cedar Valley Fundraising Board Member of the Year, American Association of Fundraising Executives Easter Iowa Chapter 2007 Volunteer Fundraiser, Iowa State University Alumni Association Service Key Award, Who’s Who of Business Executives, Women in Communications "Salute" Award and many awards from CASE; Marketing, Advertising & Communication Professionals of Northeast Iowa; Iowa Bankers Association and Women in Communication.

ME&V recognitions include the Ernst and Young 2002 Entrepreneur of the Year, Inc Magazine’s 2002 and 2003 list of the 500 fastest growing companies in America, and the Eastern Iowa Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ 2002 Business Philanthropist of the Year. She has helped build a business of nearly 50 employees that has been recognized as the “Family Friendly Business” in the Cedar Valley.

She is delightfully married with two children and loves to remember directing David Hasselhoff in her high school plays. She lives by the philosophy of “having fun while doing well.”
